We're back from our week of travels and are happy to say Adelyn did pretty well! She was pleasant for most of the long drives, probably realizing that crying wouldn't help the situation... we were going to keep driving anyway. So she mostly slept, stared out the window or babbled. She did fuss on occasion, but for the most part was pretty quiet.
However, after we reached our destination city and checked into our hotel we usually went out for dinner and then trying to strap Adelyn back into her car seat (after she'd just been in there for a minimum of 5 hours) was no easy task. She would stick her elbows out and fuss and cry as if to say "You're crazy if you think I'm getting back in that thing for another six hours! I won't go! I won't go back in there!!!"
We went to Trail, Cranbrook and Revelstoke and along the way saw some great scenery. BC truly is the most beautiful place on earth. Would I want to move to and live in any of these far off places and small towns? No... but they're very beautiful! We had some good food (a random guy in Trail bought our dinner at the local Italian restaurant), saw some great sights, Andrew saw a few bears and we had so much fun on the world's best water slide (in the hotel in Cranbrook). So all in all it was a good trip, nice to see what Andrew does on these trips too.
Anyway, back to the real world, Adelyn's slowly getting back into her regular sleep patterns. She slept from 10:40 to 4:40 am straight a few nights ago, which is great! BUT then the following night she was up every two to three hours. Not so great. So it kinda goes back and forth. While she's always fed a couple times during the night it's never been a problem because I always felt pretty rested (for the most part anyway), but now it is a problem because I'm just wiped on any given day, and I don't like that!
But we're being pretty persistent in not rushing in to her room when she wakes during the night. Often times if she wakes she'll cry for a few minutes and then go right back to sleep. I guess all we can really do is be patient. One day she'll sleep through the night. And that will be followed with another glorious night of sleep. And then another. It'll happen. I just can't wait though!
We started feeding Adelyn "real" food for dinner on Monday as we thought she'd be sick of the same old rice cereal day in and day out. So I started with one of my favourite foods, Avocado. Did she like it as much as I do? Hardly. She kept sticking out her tongue in disgust and even gagging. I guess she didn't like it much... So the next night I started dinner out with mashed bananas and... nope, she didn't like those either. So, I brought out the sure-fire winner for the night- applesauce. And to our surprise she wasn't fond of that either! But we did get some great video of her eating it... her one eye closes and she shudders as if she had just done a shot of tequila. We killed ourselves laughing! It was so funny... it made up for all the previous meal failures.
The real food thing isn't going too well so far as Adelyn simply won't open her mouth, so feeding her is quite a challenge. But it's still new, so hopefully she'll slowly get used to the different flavours and textures and come around. She wants to eat, that much is obvious, so hopefully soon she'll actually participate in the feedings!
We also started Mom and Tots swimming lessons this week (big week, I know!). It's been kinda fun, (mostly because we have two friends in the class) but it's really been unorganized and very whimsical. The instructor isn't very clear and the class isn't very structured, so I don't feel like I'm learning anything, and I really wanted to learn what to do with Adelyn in the water. The instructor casually got us to bring the babies to the wall of the pool and then went "Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall, Humpty Dumpty had a big fall!" and then got us to bring the babies into the pool. Then she says we can put the babies under if we want, but only if we're comfortable. But she offered NO instruction on how to do that properly! Luckily for us one of our friends had taken the class before (with a different instructor) and was shown how, so she showed me how to do it. Frustrating! But after going under a few times Adelyn started to anticipate it and would scrunch up her face and hold her breath on her own! That part was very exciting! I was so proud! Plus, she has the cutest little gym membership card with her picture on it! I carry it in my wallet and have been showing it to everyone I know.
I really didn't want to be one of those gushing parents who carried all these pictures around of their kids and showed them to everyone and anyone, but I just can't help it- she's just too cute!
Anyway, it's been a long week and a long night, so I think I'm going to take advantage of the fact that Adelyn's sleeping and go take a bath.
Happy Thanksgiving!
