Baby School

I think we're allowed to have a baby now- we passed Baby School! Well, it wasn't so much a pass or fail thing as it was just showing up to learn some things. But we went, learned and passed as far as I'm concerned.
We spent all day Saturday at the Health Unit in a "Prenatal in a Day" class. Holy crap, it went soooo fast! They jumped from topic to topic, passing out handouts and spewing out all sorts of information. I can see now how taking the evening classes and having more time is beneficial! But it was good. We did learn not to shake the baby and that labour will hurt, but we also learned about the art of breastfeeding, the progression of labour, different pain medications, interventions in labour (forceps, vacuum extractor, etc.) and a lot more. It was good. I definitely feel more ready now. And I'm quite impressed by the longevity of breast milk- who knew it could last up to 6 months in the deep freeze? Breast milk popsicles anyone? (OK, I think I just grossed myself out!)
I think Andrew had a good time too. We sat next to a girl Andrew's been friends with since they were four and they exchanged funny comments throughout the class. It was pretty comical. The nurse asked us what one of the biggest hazards to drinking while pregnant was and Andrew blurts out "Falling down the stairs!" Laughs ensued. I shook my head with mild embarrassment. But it was pretty funny. Also funny was the other nurse saying you have to jam your breast in the baby's mouth- "Give it a good mouthful of breast" I think is what she said.

OK, back to labour... I'm also a little freaked out about getting an Epidural now. I mean, I'm totally up for whatever needs to be done to get Tex out of me, but after watching a birthing video where the woman had an Epidural I'm kind of turned off of them. She was completely unable to control any part of her labour and it kind of reminded me of a cow giving birth. She was even moaning like a cow. It was bizarre. Maybe it was the moaning like a cow that turned me off the most. I half expected some guy in overalls to come in with some shackles and yard the baby out by the ankles. Yikes.

We also went for a tour of the hospital and got to view the delivery rooms, post delivery rooms and the "continental breakfast" room that I'm kind of excited about, even though I know it'll still be gross hospital food. But I digress...
In the delivery room there's a shower and you're allowed to bring the birthing balls (exercise balls) into the shower if you want. However, if you're not careful the ball can block the drain and you can end up flooding the O.R. on the 2nd floor! That doesn't seem very sanitary to me! You'd think they'd fix that, instead of relying on women in labour to focus on not flooding the hospital.

So now that we've passed Baby School there's nothing really left to do until the baby comes except pack our bags, twiddle our thumbs, and work on building my pain threshold. I'm going to start by banging my head against the counter until I can do it without screaming. Wish me luck!

Baby Love... 35 weeks

It's always weird for me to have my picture taken... I'm somewhat frightened by the camera. But nevertheless, Andrew and I went out last Saturday (almost 35 weeks) to have our wonderful pregnancy captured on film, er, digital.
We had
Kelly Corbett, the same photographer who did our wedding photos, come and snap some pictures for us in that little old Chapel in Greendale (the one we were originally looking at getting married in.) Anyway, with a little bit of fabric, a giant light box and some encouragement, support and stupid voices/faces from Andrew (again, I'm nervous in front of the camera and so I smile like a fool) we were able to get some amazing memories (and photos.)
We still haven't decided how we're going to display/store them yet, but we're just happy to have them :)

Hope you enjoy!

PS: Kelly also took a couple of non-pregnancy-focused portraits of us, since the last nice ones we have are from our wedding. Here are a couple...

Bye Bye Beetle... Hello Baby-Mobile

I knew this day was coming... the day I had to say goodbye to my beloved VW Beetle. I knew it was coming, and yet it was just as hard as ever. I know it's silly to be attached to a hunk of metal, but I loved my car. And I'm really sad about having to sell it.
Why did I have to sell it? Well, I couldn't fit a baby and a stroller in the car at the same time. And I think I'll rarely be driving around with the stroller and not the baby, so I had to make a choice between not using a stroller and bidding my car farewell.

So, I decided to sell it. BUT, lucky for me my Oma Willis (Dad's mom) bought it from me! So, not only do I know it'll be well taken care of, but I can visit it anytime! As Oma said, whenever she comes to visit my baby, I can visit her baby. Knowing that I can still give my car a hug when I need to makes me feel better.

Yesterday, which I've dubbed "Black Thursday", was the official sales day, and day of mourning. It was a very dark and sad day.
But today is a much happier day as I get to celebrate the arrival of my newest baby- a 2007
Toyota Yaris! It's a very cute, very fuel efficient, very spunky brand new car. Yes, it's a "family car" but it's still fun and sporty feeling and fun to drive. I love it. And I love that's it's brand new. I never, ever thought I'd ever own a brand new car, but Texas Ranger needed a new chariot, so what better excuse?
So we're now one step closer to being all ready for our little one.

Here are some photos of my old and new babies! Aren't they precious?!?
Cheers,
